SwingGraphs was created to provide swing path data (Vertical Bat Angle & Swing Path Scores) on MLB hitters that is not publicly available from any other source. The origins of what is presented on this site go back several years. In depth research resulted in a patented swing path device – the Quant Tee in 2013 and the book Quantitative Hitting published the research and findings of how the best hitters were using very different angle combinations for different pitch locations in 2018.
In the book, we discuss our initial unsuccessful attempt to obtain Vertical Bat Angles (VBA) for major league hitters utilizing a computer vision approach. We didn’t give up, however, and finally have that VBA data – on every hitter in major league baseball since 2018. To our knowledge, this is the first publicly available information on VBA for MLB players. This swing path angle (VBA), combined with Statcast data including incoming pitch and outgoing hit angles, allow reasonable estimates to be made regarding the complete swing path for each major league hitter – for each pitch location.
We believe this is only the start of bringing more valuable information to the marketplace for both research, player evaluation, and player development.
